About Us
Montello Racing Pigeon Club
Reliefs depict pigeons carrying messages for the Egyptians and Persians.

In Greece, Homing pigeons were used to carry news of the Olympic game victories
to different cities, and in the first century B.C., Julius Caesar used them to
communicate with his troops in the field. During the Franco-Prussian war, the
French used homing pigeons, and the Germans trained hawks to stop them.

In the eighteen hundreds, pigeons carried stock prices from London across the
English Channel to Belgium, and during World War II, The U.S. Army employed
54,000 homing pigeons as message carriers. The Armies last active duty pigeon
was retired in 1956.

The Montello Racing Pigeon Club Chartered with The American Racing Pigeon
Union in 1975. Montello was the most central location of the seven rural fanciers.
Distance did not stop them from enjoying the sport of racing their beloved racing
pigeons, even if forty miles separated them from East to West. Shipping the birds
was a task in itself; the members had to meet the truck twenty miles away in the
wee hours of the morning.

In 1982 the Montello club decided to truck our own birds, more shows and auctions
were held to purchase our own truck and trailer,  then in nineteen eighty eight
Montello’s first one loft race was held so the truck and trailer could be updated.
The one loft race was very popular and continued into 2002.

The club grew to eighteen members including juniors; today we have twelve senior
members with only one original charter member, Bill Lind of Montello. Our
memberships are still spread apart by fifty miles East to West. The competition is
tough;  camaraderie is great, and we are extremely fortunate to have such a great
group of members to fly with. Our new trailer is state of the art; it can hold 1800
birds and has automatic waterers, exhaust fans, and is built of light weight
aluminum.

In 2008 the Montello Racing Pigeon Club will be hosting The Midwest Convention
race, in Wautoma Wisconsin . The facility should please everyone attending, it will
be held at the beautiful Pine Ridge of Wautoma resort, check out their website www.
pineridgeofwautoma.com, then come and meet us in the middle, for what will be a
great race.
